Forced Marriage Law comes into effect today
Posted on 2011-11-28 in General

A law which is hoped will give greater protection to those faced with a situation that would involve them being forced to marry another person comes into force today.

The Forced Marriage (Protection and Jurisdiction) Scotland Act 2011 allows courts to order Forced Marriage Protection Orders that will hopefully afford protection to persons faced with this. Breach of the order is also classed as a criminal offence which is unusual in non-criminal proceedings and is a stronger deterrant than is available in the English courts.

The order can be sought by the victim or third parties that fall under those defined in the legislation.
